How do you soften an industrial space?

In my previous blog post I talked about how you can bring some industrial style into your home. But what if you already work or live in an industrial space, or you went for an industrial-themed home… and now it all feels a little bit cold? Here are some tips on how to make your industrial home feel more welcoming.

Industrial-style homes typically have leather sofas and furniture made out of materials such as wood and cast iron.

While these furnishings are usually absolutely beautiful and extremely durable, they can also make the space feel a bit cold and almost impersonal rather than welcoming.

Thankfully, this is not that hard to remedy while still maintaining that industrial feel you so love.

  • If you have leather sofas, add an armchair upholstered in a soft velvet fabric to your office or living room. The contrast between the two materials will add to the character of your home. If you’re feeling brave, you can take it up another notch and go for a chair in a bright colour.

These chairs are upholstered in a velvet fabric and are the perfect addition to your industrial home or workspace.

  • Adding a rug can make all the difference. Not only does a rug make the space look more warm and welcoming, walking over one will also give you that nice comfortable feeling of being home.

These beautifully textured rugs are available in multiple colours.

  • Add some cushions and throws into the mix. Or how about a pouf? Especially in winter this will make your space truly look and feel like a warm welcoming home. You can go for muted more industrial colours or add a splash of colour to your interior.

These handmade throws will keep you warm in winter, and you can never go wrong with a pouf.

  • Dare to be bold. Choose a colourful wallpaper and apply it to one wall only. It will really liven up your space and give it some personality while still maintaining that industrial feel. Keep in mind how the temperature of your wallpaper’s colours can change the mood of your entire room.

We have many wallpapers available in different colours and textures.

  • Be clever about your lighting. Lighting has a big influence on a room’s mood, and we’re not just talking about choosing a nice pendant or wall light here. The warmth of the bulb is also important. Does your space look better lit up by a white/blue light, or would it benefit from a warm more orange light?

These vintage LED bulbs will look much better with your industrial lights than the standard bulbs you can buy.

  • And finally, don’t forget your candles and plants, and string lights. :)
